Bulbarrow was based on an area relating to a Thomas Hardy novel(Tess of the D'Urbervilles) set in Dorset naturally. The Wave pictures formed part of a series of five paintings, set again in the Dorset region. Easdale Pier was an early painting based on a stay in the Oban region.
